The Sabrinas have a long and rich history dating back to 1857.
In 1857, a 350 pound bronze statue of a nude nymph named Sabrina was donated to Amherst College. Within a few years of her arrival, the men of Amherst began to involve her in school pranks. Every year the pranks grew in intensity, and eventually around 1890 a tradition developed in which the odd and even classes would compete to steal the statue. Today, Sabrina is safely locked away. Her name, however, lives on in the Amherst College Sabrinas.
Until 1976, Sabrina was the only woman on the Amherst College campus.
By 1980, the Sabrinas were established as an all women singing group. At first, the group experimented with names like "The Kumquats", but quickly abandoned these monikers in favor of something more historic.
Although the group's original uniform consisted of denim overalls, the Sabrinas are now known to sport red and black.
The Sabrinas are a family!
The Sabs love spending time with one another on and off the stage and are committed to putting on great performances for the Amherst community. We are proud of our rich history and strive to sing sweet songs in honor of all the Sabrinas that have come before!
